A couple of weeks ago I told you about a Greek burger I was working on and we made this tzatziki, now it’s time to bring it home and make this thing happen. I did a little research (aka, I made a bunch of tasty mini burgers) to nail down the recipe starting with a lamb only patty and ending up with a well seasoned lamb/beef combo.

For me, the combo was on point because lamb is fairly strongly flavored so it helps cut that down while still giving you the essence of a gyro. Pile some fresh tzatzik, feta cheese, red onion and cucumber and we are there. All the amazing Greek gyro flavors brought together in one simple, delicious burger. Voila!

Gyro Burgers

Inspired by Greek gyros, these burgers combine all the familiar flavors with a new twist

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 15 minutes
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 8 burgers

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground lamb
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 large yellow onion, diced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh oregano, diced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • Hamburger buns
  • Garnish: tzatziki, red onion, feta cheese, cucumber slices

Instructions

  1. Gently mix meats, garlic, onion and spices until just combined, being careful to not overwork the meat as this will make your burgers tough.
  2. On a grill preheated to 350º or large skillet over medium high heat cook burgers to your liking, if using lamb this should be atleast 160º F or medium well.
  3. Remove burgers from heat and allow to rest for a few minutes.
  4. Serve garnished with tzatziki, red onion, feta cheese and cucumber slices if desired.
